Description/Job Summary

The Ordinary Seaman is responsible to the Captain at all times; however, reports to the Officer in Charge of the Navigation when on duty. Local candidates preferred.


  • Lookout.
  • Handles lines to and from the vessel during operations at the direction of the Officer in Charge of the Navigation Watch; secures vessel to dock.
  • Directs vehicles on and off the vessel.
  • Assist the Mate and AB in the inspection of lifesaving, firefighting, and all other safety equipment to ensure all are in working order. 
  • Assists passengers who require assistance on and off the vessel.
  • Participates in all training, drills and exercises.
  • Performs assigned firefighting, man overboard and abandon ship duties as assigned on the Station Bill.
  • Performs painting, cleaning and maintenance duties as assigned by the Captain or Mate; general upkeep of the vessel.
  • Project a positive company image to customers, other mariners, terminal personnel and the public.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the Mate or Captain.

Preferred Experience

Deck experience on a tug, fishing or other type vessel.

Required Qualifications

  • Current U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with Ordinary Seaman (OS) rating.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Pass pre-employment drug test.
  • Pass pre-employment physical.
  • Entry level position; however, prior deck experience aboard a commercial or non-commercial vessel is a plus..
